Wild Cards – Jan 25, 2016

Krazy Pic  SO subtle, in 2 or 3 ways!!  And so curious, in just as many. While pondering the first mystery, there’s the almost-missed sign in the background!  Don’t miss this one! – KrPic16.1.4

Joke for the Week  When does your love for golf get too carried away?  This week’s Joke may have an answer.  See Jokes.

Update – World’s Longest Town Name  Perhaps you’ll recall a shot from last year (March 16) of a town in Wales which claims the title for ‘World’s Longest Town Name’.  I recently discovered another picture that actually gives the translation.  Whew!  I’m not sure it makes things any clearer.  🙂  To see the original photo, and the new shot(s), visit Town Name.

Brain Teasers – Updates!  This is the last week to submit answers to January’s BTs.  There are TWO reasons to re-explore this page:  1) I’ve added two EASIER final BTs to the mix.  2)  There is an update & current record to the Contest in BT #8!  Be sure to see it.  Visit JanBTs.

365 Stupidest Things Ever Said  We haven’t featured these in months (4, to be exact), so time for some more.  Newt Gingrinch and beach volleyball??  I think ‘stupid’ is a little strong on a couple of these, but they’re fun anyway.  See StupidSayings.

Exciting Math News! – New Largest Prime Found!  Go ahead, roll your eyes, but to some math-types, this is heady stuff.  This new largest prime has over 22 million digits, and is one of a special class of primes called Mersenne Primes.  There are only 49 of them known. The discoverer of this one is Curtis Cooper*, from University of Central MO!  For more details and some history, visit MersenneInfo.  To see an interesting list/table of all 49 known Mersenne Primes, see MersenneList.  For a couple of general news stories (the first one includes Curtis’ picture*), see News1 and/or News2.

*NEWS FLASH – Curtis will be my guest on my AfterMath Adventures show later in February.  Watch for details.
