Wild Cards! – March 5, 2018

Today’s Krazy Pic theme seems to be diving.   Make sure you ‘dive into’ all three links.

Krazy Pic 1 I was a diver in college. But there’s NO WAY I’d have had the guts to do this AMAZING DIVE. Part of me cannot stand to watch this, the rest of me is repeatedly drawn back in fascination!  (As if to balance that, check out this NotSoAmazing Dive.  It goes downhill fast.  🙂 )

Krazy Pic 2 Not that most of us would need convincing, but here’s a very good reason diving is usually restricted to water!  (Be sure to wait for the reaction at the end.)

Curling Your Mind around this sport!  You undoubtedly saw the feel-good Gold Medal story of the US Curling team.  Were you as confused as I was about the rules? Here’s a well-done clip that helps.  (If you’re interested, here’s a fascinating glimpse at some of the mysterious science of the sport.)

OMG!  Weird feeling!  I mentioned diving above.  I just discovered that one of my old diving coaches from pre-college swimming days is still diving . . . at 91!!  Check out this clip – I can’t decide if that makes me feel a little younger or much older!

Answers (and FUN FACTS) to Jan/Feb Brain Teasers  We’ll start a new round of BTs next time.  But for now, here is the Wrap-Up Summary of Solutions & Submitters to the latest set (Jan/Feb).  See #9 and #12 for the FUN FACTS mentioned last time, as well!  (#12 is very general – not mathy – and a good piece of trivia!  🙂 ).

March Birthdays  Here is our list of (known) subscribers with birthdays in March.

Happy ‘Twin Prime’ Day!!  If you’re reading this on Monday, as most of you will, you will note that the date is 3/5.  The primes 3 & 5 form a pair of ‘twin primes’, so it is a ‘twin prime’ day!  There are only three such days every year!  (Can you name the other two?).  For more information on twin primes (including a famous unknown question about them!), refer to the (slightly updated) link, and see the blue font there.

Students, Education, . . . and Guns  School shootings, arming teachers, the 2nd Amendment, and the NRA.  Tragic and controversial, to say the least.  My own quick takes on some of these ideas in this week’s Springfield News-Leader column.

(Humorous) Quote for the Week

I hate it when I think I’m buying organic vegetables, and I get home to discover they’re just regular donuts.
