Wild Cards! – Apr 11, 2016

Krazy Pic  You see, I don’t really think those are cows. Look closely.  See KrPic.4/11/16

Joke of the Week  Interesting strategy.  Might guarantee a spot sleeping on the couch?!  See JokeWk.

Guest Photo You’ve seen several photos taken in Bosque del Apache in these mailings.  Those photos were were taken while visiting Marvin De Jong (and his wife Claudia) during a volunteer stint there. Marv is this week’s contributor to our Guest Photo feature, and his beautiful sunset shot provides a glimpse at more Sandhill Cranes from much further north.  Enjoy!!  See GP:MarvDeJong

Doubly Clever!  A new wife experiencing the typical frustrations of early-marriage-after-dating, vented her gripes in a clever e-mail to her computer tech department – and then promptly forgot about it.  Until, that is, she received this even-more-clever response!!  See Husband1.0  Thanks to reader David Perkins for sharing this.

Historical Update I was reminded (by a particularly beautiful reader) of an interesting historical fact about the Ponte Veccio Bridge in Florence – last week’s Photo of the Week.  It was the only bridge in Florence to survive the World War II bombing raids!  This explains the continued existence of the bridge shops there.  For another look, see FlorenceBridge.

April Brain Teasers  I almost skipped the BTs this month, but had a last-minute change of heart.  Here are three that I hope will tickle your fancy.  Two of them don’t even hint at math!   See Apr.BTs

My Wife, My Math, . . and Basic Skills? Those of you who know Pat will know that her view of math is less than enthusiastic, and this has led to some funny situations over the years, including sometimes, her anger at my profession – and me. 🙂  I shared a couple of these, along with some actual educational connections last week in my column.  If you’re interested, see Pat.Math.Educ

Thought for the Week:

Much learning does not teach a man to have intelligence.         Heraclitus
