Ben Johnson Follow Up to Guest Voice :-)

I have the honor of being the son of Millie and Jerry. I just want to add to this, saying that in addition to the thousands of cookbooks that adorn the shelves, my father is an avid clipper of recipes from magazines and other sources. He collects them in shoeboxes and has a rule that he will never make a recipe more than once unless it is spectacular. His process is to pick a recipe, make it, and then throw it away unless it has truly impressed.
As one could guess, dinner conversation at our house usually revolved around mathematics in some way and whether I knew how to solve various problems. I have always enjoyed math though, so this was fine by me, but some of the most memorable dinner memories I have is when we’d have guests over, and my father would pick out several recipes from different origins, and then we’d have a multi-course dinner where each course comes from a different country or something extravagent and unique. Simply put, I remember it being delicious and a lot of fun.
I look forward to one day visiting my parents and having a dinner feast of unique dishes that is finished off with Eskimo Ice Cream for dessert!

  1. What a treat to read a discussion of (Eskimo) ice cream by none other than Ben and Jerry! I happened to see a show on PBS which featured Alaska and discussed Eskimo ice cream. They sometimes now try to replicate the dish using crisco, which is more readily available. Of course, it’s not quite the same, but maybe it helps one to imagine the dish. Consider: some frostings and Oreo stuff are basically crisco and sugar.
