Krazy Pic 1 Several possible conclusions here? What’s your favorite?
Krazy Pic 2 Mom’s relaxing time in the park – who needs to carry a portable playpen?
Bonus Krazy Pic Two Mailings in a row for a Bonus Pic! It’s not really a ‘Krazy Pic’, but it will cause you to do a double-take or two. If you’re a fan of optical illusions and/or math, you’ll likely have heard of MC Escher. Here’s a table and chair from his office! (If you haven’t encountered him before, you’re in for a treat! Learn – and see – more here.) This Pic/Drawing from a group e-mail by subscriber Richard Barger.
Cartoon of the Week Speaking of Escher, you’ll appreciate this MUCH more if you’re familiar with Escher and/or looked at the Bonus KP above. It’s not often that artists and math-types make their way into cartoons!
Amazing Location of the Week This week’s Amazing Location is ‘amazing’ not so much for beauty or architecture, etc, but rather for the amazing circumstances. Welcome to Snake Island! Located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil, “Snake Island” (Ilha da Queimada Grande) is not a place you would want to visit, even if you were allowed. Visitors are not permitted, as this hazardous island is home to the world’s deadliest, most endangered snakes. See an aerial view and learn more details.
Pesky Puzzle IV Our newest Pesky Puzzle only involves counting, so it should be fun! You do not have to be a ‘math nerd’ (but it might help to be a ‘square’?)
Solution Pesky Puzzler 3 The last Puzzler involved finding (at least) one unique feature of a 3 x 3 square of the digits from 1 – 9. Subscribers Jenny Wall and Rita Barger submitted correct solutions. Here are the solutions and two of the unique features noticed.
Isn’t Math Wonderful? This may become a semi-regular feature (once monthly or so?) as I continue the lonely crusade to advertise that “Math is not a four-letter word!” Our first anecdote refers back to the topics hinted at in Pesky Puzzler 3, and asks the question How does a 16th century woodcut by Albert Durer hide a fun and amazing mathematical magic square?
