Macy’s Solution to the Painted Cube Brain Teaser
Macy Middleton is a 5th grade student of subscriber Alexis Avis. You probably can’t see (or zoom into) the writing on her paper, but the cube represents her solution as well. The purple corner cubes represent the cubes in the original problem that would be painted red on 3 faces (8 of them.) Her orange cubes would be painted on 2 faces (12 of them), while the green (6) would be painted on only one face. This identifies 26 of the 27 smaller cubes – buried unseen inside is the one remaining cube that would have no paint on any faces.
Nice going, Macy!
