Wild Cards! June 25, 2018

I recently attended the Missouri Senior Games, where I was chagrined to discover that my age bracket (if you don’t already know, forget it . . .) was – counterintutively – often the largest (?!)  I had fun, but the trip has inspired this week’s Krazy Pics.  You’ll see why.

Krazy Pic 1  There was an event for Long Jump at the Games, but NOT for ‘Blindfolded Long Jump’.  This suggests why!  OUCH!

Krazy Pic 2  Neither do they try hurdles events at the Senior Games, and again, for good reasons. (This guy definitely has the spirit though, and reminds me of the old Timex slogan:  “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking!!” ).

Life’s Truths – Final Installment  The last few of our three-part sharing of A Few of Life’s Truths.  The new ones are in red, but the entire set is included.  Hope you’ve enjoyed!  (Unfortunately, the one that’s “all me” this time is #24.  Don’t you hate aging?)

Brain Teasers:  Wrap Up and Head Start  You have roughly until the end of this month (probably a little longer) to submit your thoughts on the May/June BTs.  Join the fun.  ALSO: If you want a head start, here are the first three BTs for July/August.  At least one is a repeat.  Enjoy.  (Pat complained the BTs were too ‘mathy’ last time [did she see the geography ones?], so none of these three involve math!)

Guest Voice!  I first ‘met’ Dan Felshin by e-mail back in early 2016, when he responded to a column containing a Brain Teaser (which he eventually solved.)  He proudly stated back then that he was 81 and still enjoyed doing logic and puzzles.  Since then, Dan has been a regular correspondent – and we’ve even met once. He has a delightful sense of humor which borders on off-the-wall sometimes.  (Example:  His ‘user name’ is UserName and his e-mail begins ‘SaveUserName . . . .!)  Dan has accepted my general call for Guest Voices (see GuestVoiceThoughts) with a piece called Semantics.  It is uniquely Dan, which is part of what I like about it.  Enjoy. Thanks, Dan!  (Who will be next?!)

July Birthdays  An early look at next month’s subscriber birthdays.  (At least the ones we know of!)

From Harvard to Herschend Two positive, uplifting education stories from the news for a change!  One is a feel-good story involving a Harvard graduation, and the other finally provides good news about the Missouri State Board of Education.  My News-Leader column appearing today.
